After Nathan Chasing Horse was arrested and charged with sex crimes against indigenous girls, details of the case shocked the world.

The 46-year-old actor from Dances With Wolves turned cult leader is accused of using his self-appointed role as a supposed “Medicine Man” to lure and groom Native girls before raping and abusing them. He would often pop up at indigenous ceremonies and celebrations.

Investigating Police in Canada said he would pay attention mainly to single mothers with daughters. He has done this for the past two decades in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, police said.

The most recent investigation and arrest came in October 2022 after US authorities received a tip from British Columbia’s Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

While details are shocking, that is not the worst.

The most disturbing stories came from the victims themselves.

The Tsuut’ina woman

The Tsuut’ina Nation Police of Alberta confirmed they were investigating Chasing Horse after a Tsuut’ina woman reported she was sexually assaulted and the victim of sex trafficking.

The woman said her mother gave her to Chasing Horse as a “gift” when she was 15-years-old. She would go on to become Chasing Horse’s fourth wife. She left him in 2022 when “she could no longer take the abuse.”

Her mother became a part of “The Circle,” Chasing Horses cult. In 2006, the victim told police he came to Tsuut’ina to perform ceremonies as a “Medicine Man.” At the time, the victim was 14-years-old.

One night he came into her bedroom and raped her after he confirmed she was a virgin.

In 2009, she traveled to the U.S. to live with Chasing Horse. She became his fourth wife when she turned 17-years-old, reports state.

A former wife of Chasing Horse told investigators the Tsuut’ina woman was given to Chasing Horse by her mother and was at the ceremony where Chasing Horse took the Tsuut’ina girl.

A week after being his fourth wife, Chasing Horse became physically abusive on a weekly basis, even breaking the girls ribs at one point.

In 2014, Chasing Horse forced her and other wives to have sex with his friends, men he called his “helpers.” These are the people who, along with his wives, travel with Chasing Horse, documents state.

The allegations were repeated by other women who were identified as being Chasing Horses wives. One of the victims reported the abuse to South Dakota law enforcement. The responding officer went to the house and was told by a person who answered the door that Chasing Horse didn’t live there anymore. The person would not let them in and the police didn’t push for information. An excerpt from the police report stated the victim did not scream, yell for help, say no, or try to resist in any way and it would be hard to prosecute the case in court.

The new investigation brought authorities back to the woman, who told them more details she remembered. Chasing Horse would force her to have sex with him after every ceremony. He told her “The Grandfathers” said it has to happen.

Each time he would force her to have sex, she cried the entire time. He would hold her arms down every time.

Others

In the past 20 years, Chasing Horse would abuse other young indigenous women who genuinely believed he was “Wakan” (Holy) and he had the power to heal.

He would find desperate, vulnerable girls and use his influence for sexual gratification.

In one reported incident, a woman asked Chasing Horse to “heal her mother from cancer.”

He performed a prayer, but then he said the Grandfathers wanted her to sacrifice her virginity to him.

Locally, there are a few people who remember nearly joining Chasing Horse’s cult. One woman said she didn’t want to take his cult’s tattoo symbol, a black widow spider,  on her neck. When she pointed out the spider is a trickster, the rest of the members shunned her.

There are more victims coming forward as the investigation continues.

Chasing Horse remains jailed in Las Vegas. Even if he posts bail, he will most likely be immediately arrested by federal authorities, who are charging him with two counts of sexual exploitation of children and one count of possession of child pornography.

When police raided his Las Vegas home, they found cellphones in Chasing Horses bedroom. Videos on these phones showed Chasing Horse raping a girl who is about 11-years-old. The victim looks drugged and close to unconscious.

Canadian police as well as Fort Peck Tribal Law Enforcement have warrants charging Chasing Horse with sex crimes against children.
