A Wolf Point woman who murdered her own baby daughter was sentenced to prison this week.
During a federal court hearing in Great Falls, Heather Dawn Smith (Yellow Owl), 33, appeared before US District Judge Brian Morris for sentencing, after pleading guilty to second degree murder.
Smith was sentenced to 16 years and three months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release.
Smith pled guilty to killing her two-year-old daughter Lyla Jai Ogle.
Federal court documents state on November 8, 2020 in Wolf Point, Smith beat the victim, a two-year-old child, according to court documents. When Smith checked on the victim on November 12, the child was unresponsive.
The child was transported to the hospital in Wolf Point, where she was pronounced dead.
It was later determined the cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.
